Recently asked questions

People are frequently asking some questions from us

Finding clear guidance on autism and neurodivergence shouldn't be a privilege. SANAMA is a community-focused non-profit dedicated to practical help, not medical diagnosis. We have gathered the most common questions from our community to help you understand the local support systems, access resources, and prepare your child for a purposeful future.

Navigating Neurodiversity in South Africa

Finding answers shouldn't be a luxury. While SANAMA is a non-medical organization and does not provide clinical diagnoses, we are dedicated to closing the information gap for families. We translate complex systems into clear, actionable steps to help you advocate for your child’s future and well-being.

How do I get an autism assessment for my child in South Africa if I cannot afford private healthcare?

Navigating the public health sector can be a challenge, but you are not alone. In South Africa, you should start by visiting your local primary healthcare clinic to request a referral to a neurodevelopmental pediatric clinic at a state hospital. While waiting lists can be long, SANAMA helps families by providing the necessary guidance and support to manage this waiting period. We assist you in understanding the documentation required and offer community-based resources to support your child's development while you wait for a formal medical diagnosis.

What support is available for neurodivergent children in low-income or township communities?

Many families feel isolated due to a lack of local facilities, but neurodiversity exists in every community. SANAMA focuses on bridging this gap by bringing practical information and vocational training frameworks directly to the people who need them. We provide community workshops and digital resources that translate complex concepts into actionable steps for parents and caregivers. Our goal is to ensure that a lack of financial resources does not mean a lack of support or opportunity for neurodivergent individuals.

Can my neurodivergent teenager eventually find work or live independently?

Yes. Neurodivergence is a different way of processing the world, not an end to potential. SANAMA is building a vocational training model designed specifically for the South African labor market. We focus on identifying the unique strengths of each individual—such as attention to detail or creative problem-solving—and aligning them with work-ready skills. By shifting the focus from "fixing" a condition to developing a talent, we help young adults move toward a future of dignity and contribution.
