About SANAMA Autism Academy

Building understanding. Expanding access. Strengthening communities.

SANAMA Autism Academy is a registered Non-Profit Organisation dedicated to supporting autistic and neurodivergent children, young people, families, and communities across South Africa. We focus on education, awareness, practical support, and advocacy, with a strong commitment to underserved and low-income communities where access to services is often limited. Our work is rooted in real-life experience, community need, and a belief that every child deserves dignity, understanding, and opportunity.

Our Story

Why SANAMA Exists

SANAMA Autism Academy was founded in response to a clear and urgent need.

Across many communities, families raising autistic and neurodivergent children are often left without:

  • Clear information
  • Practical guidance
  • Access to support services
  • Understanding from schools and communities

Too often, families face confusion, isolation, and judgment instead of support.

SANAMA exists to change that.

Our Mission

To provide autism awareness programmes that:

  • Educate children and communities
  • Support parents, caregivers, and teachers
  • Improve the quality of life for families living with autism and other neurodivergent conditions

Our mission is focused on practical impact, not just awareness.

Our Vision

To build inclusive communities where autistic and neurodivergent individuals are:

  • Understood
  • Supported
  • Included in all areas of life

We envision a South Africa where access to support is not determined by income, location, or awareness.

Our Founder

SANAMA Autism Academy was founded by Nomi Mzamane, a special needs educator with over 20 years of experience in the education sector and a mother with lived experience.

Her journey through education and personal experience exposed the gaps that many families face:

  • Limited support in schools
  • Lack of awareness in communities
  • Barriers to accessing services
  • A need for practical, not just theoretical, solutions

SANAMA was created to bridge these gaps by providing accessible, community-based support that meets families where they are.

Our Motto

Accept. Understand. Love.

This is the foundation of our work.

It reflects the standard we believe every child, young person, and family deserves, in homes, schools, and communities.
