Misunderstanding and stigma

In many of our communities, autism is misunderstood. Children are often hidden away, and parents are left to feel ashamed. SANAMA works to change this. We speak up so that every child, young person, and family is treated with the respect they deserve.
At SANAMA Autism Academy, advocacy is not just about awareness. It is about real change in real communities. We are working to change that, especially in low-income communities across South Africa, where access to support is often limited.
Every day, autistic and neurodivergent children, young people, and families face:
Misunderstanding and stigma
Barriers to education
Limited access to support
Social exclusion
Autism is still widely misunderstood.
No family should feel alone, judged, or unsupported when seeking help.
In many communities, families experience:
These are not rare situations. They are daily realities for many families.
We focus on the issues that affect your daily life.
Every child has the right to be treated with kindness and humanity. We challenge those who treat our children poorly or ignore their needs. No one should be treated as “less than” because they think differently.
We fight for more schools and clinics to open their doors to our children. You deserve a clear path to help, not a waiting list or a “no.
Many parents are blamed for their child’s behavior. This is wrong. We provide the facts to help families stand tall. You deserve support and guidance, not blame or judgment.
Fear comes from a lack of understanding. We go into the heart of our communities to teach the truth about autism. We replace myths and fear with practical understanding.
Our children belong everywhere. We advocate for inclusion in churches, taxi ranks, shopping centers, and schools. Visibility is the first step toward true acceptance.
